Kamakura Travel Guide : Explore Kamakura with Wearing Yukata

K amakura is the perfect destination for the day trip from Tokyo, feeling a reminder of an ancient capital of the Kamakura era. Let me share my experience of sightseeing spot in Kamakura that I have with wearing Yukata.

Why Kamakura is Famous? 

Kamakura is an ancient capital of the Kamakura era, from 1185 to 1333, and is surrounded by a rich natural environment of mountains and ocean. Therefore you can feel authentic of Japanese from architecture, shrines and temples, together with the beautiful scenery from season to season. The hiking trails and the beaches are famous for locals as well. 

How to get to Kamakura? 

Kawamura is the best place that you can do shorttrip from Tokyo for a day. 

From Tokyo Station to Kamakura Station is around 55 minutes with JR Yokosuka Line. Most of the attractions are within walking distance from Kamakura station and some others are accessible with local trains or buses.

Where to go in Kamakura?

  • Komachi-dori street

You can explore this area first since this alley is starting from right in front of JR Kamakura station until Tsuruoka Hachimangu. 
There are a lot of restaurants, cafes, and boutiques so make sure to try some snacks or have an early lunch before proceeding to the next destinations.

  • Tsuruoka Hachimangu Shrine 

Dubbed as Kamakura's most important Shrinto shrine. Walk along Komachi-dori shopping street or along the Dankazura, a pedestrian path in the center of Wakamiya Oji Street. This place is very very populer for Cherry Blossom, Sakura viewing.

Sakura at Tsuruoka Hachimangu Shrine

  • Hokokuji Temple

A small temple of the Rinzai Sect of Zen Buddhism and popularly known for it's small bamboo grove. Behind the temple's main hall, walk along the pathway of bamboo grove and you will see a tea house. You can enjoy a matcha tea while enjoying the views of bamboo with a minimal fee.

Location: 7mins by car or local bus from JR Kamakura sta.

  • Great Buddha of Kamakura

It is the second tallest buddha statue in Japan and the symbol of historic town in Kamakura, also famous for Cherry Bloosom Viewing and Autumn Leave Viewing.

Location: 20mins local bus ride from JR Kamakura sta. / 7mins walk from Hase sta. (Enoden Train)

  • Meigetsuin

Meigetsuin is the Zen temple, famous for its hydrangeas so it's also known as "The Temple of Hydrangeas". Normally the season for the Hydrangeas is from end of May to early Jun.  

Location: 10mins walk from JR Kita- Kamakura sta.
