Survival Japanese for The First Time Travelers to Japan -Part 1-

H ave you ever wondered what are the basic Japanese words that you need during your first time visit in Japan? In this article, we will help you challenge Japanese language.

Learn how to Greet, to Ask for directions, to Dine at Restaurant in Nihongo. 

 

BASIC GREETINGS 

  • Ohayou Gozaimasu - Good morning
  • Konnichiwa -   Hi or Good afternoon
  • Konbanwa - Good evening
  • Arigatou gozaimasu - Thank you very much
  • Hai - Yes
  • Iie - No
  • Sumimasen - Excuse me, Sorry, or Say thank you

ASKING DIRECTION

Learn how to go to each areas

  • Sumimasen. Michi o kiite mo ii desu ka? - Excuse me. May I ask you for directions?
  • Shinjuku Washington Hotel  wa doko desu ka? - Where is this hotel? 

*Tip: You can use this phrase : "  ______ wa, doko desu ka?" when you want to ask for some directions as below.

You can ask directly if you know the name of place or establishment you want to visit. 

You can use the following key words below and just add "doko desu ka?"

  • Konbini - convenient store
  • Shinjuku eki -  Shinjuku station (Name of station then "eki")
  • Toire - toilet/restroom
  • Basu no noriba - bus station 
  • Shinjuku Koen - Shinjuku Park (Name of park then "koen")
  • ATM / Ginko - ATM/ Bank
  • Kusuri ya - Drugstore
  • Ueno Doubutsuen -  Ueno Zoo (Name of Zoo then "doubutsuen")
  • Resutoran - Restaurant
  • Supamaketto - Supermarket

AT RESTAURANTS

Learn how to order, ask question to waiter and how to pay the bill and useful phrases when dining.

  • Sumimasen - Excuse me 
  • Eigo menu wa arimasu ka - Do you have english Menu
  • Osusume wa nandesuka? - What do you recommend?
  • Kore kudasai - When you decide which one to order
  • Itadikimasu -  a humble way of saying, to eat and to receive
  • Omizu kudasai - Water please
  • Mochikaeri ni dekimasuka? - Can I take it home?
  • Okaikei onegaishimasu - Bill please
  • Kaado wa tsukaemasu ka? - Can i pay by credit card?
  • Gochisosama deshita -  This is a phrase that's used when you finish eating in Japan. After paying, you can say this to the staff when leaving the restaurant.
